Necessary information to publish a book with us
Material Requirements: text
If you do not have the opportunity to independently make a computer typing of the text of the book, you can submit a manuscript to the publisher.
Materials must be submitted in the order indicated by the content.
If you submit a computer set to a publisher, it must meet the following requirements
Author's text
must be typed and passed to the layout in Word.
It is necessary to make the necessary text selection in the file (italics, p/f, italics + p/f), clear breakdown into sections, chapters, hierarchy of headings, epigraphs, additional texts, lists, inserts, indicate places for illustrations.
If color coding is required, it is necessary to change the color of the text itself (font), not to “lift” it with the help of a marker.
Tables are dialed without "coloring."
Word features
Word has the ability to place text in separate frames (frames). For example, to denote a sidebar. Please do not use them. When you fill the text in the layout program, these frames disappear. Recovery is possible, but it takes time
If you do not make a sketch in Word, but type text for a book, then the simpler the design, the better.
Spaces
double spaces are not allowed;
spaces (aproshi) between words should be evenly distributed, especially on one spread;
the text should not be tightly compressed in one paragraph, and discharged in another
Transfers
for a book layout, the number of transfers that go in a row is no more than 3-4;
the layout program makes error-free hyphenation;
transfers from a turn to a turn are not allowed (from odd to even page);
do not put the hyphenation manually with the hyphen symbol, since in the layout process, when the text is re-arranged, the hyphens are saved and all this will have to be corrected.
Dash and hyphen
in compound words, with extensions of endings a hyphen is put. For example, yellow-green, 2nd;
between parts of the sentence the hyphen is replaced with a long dash (with spaces on both sides) - Alt + 0151. For example, the repetition is the mother of the teaching;
for a range of numbers, telephone numbers there is a short dash (without spaces) - Alt + 0150. For example, the 2018–2019 school year;
a dash cannot be left at the beginning of a line unless it is a dialogue or a list.
Prepositions and conjunctions, initials>
single letter prepositions and conjunctions must be nailed to the word, i.e. they cannot be left at the end of the line;
initials must be on the same line with the last name (preferably, before the last name)
binding with a fixed space of initials to the surname, units measurements to numbers, prepositions, conjunctions to the word, etc., are done only in the course of the layout and in the layout program itself. In Word, this is useless.
Accentuations
Correct and fast placement of accents in MS Word
after the shock letter, type 0301 and immediately press the key combination ALT+X;
position the cursor after the drum letter and press the ALT+769 combination (the numbers on the side/number keypad).
Footnotes
Footnotes should not be inserted manually, only by using Word
References tab -> Insert footnote
References tab -> Insert endnote
Strings
The first paragraph of the line should not remain last on the page, looking up from the following. An exception, but only within a reversal: texts with a large number of short paragraphs or dialogues and small-format publications (eg, pocket);
the end line of the paragraph (last) should not go to the next page, breaking away from the previous ones;
The last line of a paragraph should not be shorter than 1.5–2 lengths of indentation defined for a specific layout;
lines should be on the same line on the spread and on the page clearance;
never break lines with Shift+Enter;
Start a new paragraph with the Enter key.
Quotes
in quotes, preferably quotation marks in the form «» are used, but it is important that they are the same throughout the text.
Apostrophe
correctly set the key combination - Alt+0146.
The author's text should be well checked before the transfer to the layout
making a small number of corrections after proofreading is a standard. For making edits for a large number of errors, adding or removing blocks of text will require an extra charge.
A small book is best collected in one file.
If you transfer individual files of parts or chapters, you must provide a file with a list of their sequence (table of contents) or be numbered in the file name itself: 1.doc, 2.doc.
Save the Word files with the extension (type) * .doc of Word 97-2003 (the * .docx files must be saved without the last letter "x").
Material Requirements: poems
Features of the layout of poems
the poem is usually placed in the optical middle of the page;
alternations of quatrains with a draw and without a draw in each other do not beat off;
quitting of the quatrains is usually made on the size of the font size;
in case of undesirable breaking of the quatrains into different pages, the beat is reduced by 0.5 point or increased to 1.5 point;
poems on a spread make out uniformly;
poems inside prose usually beat off text from a single line of the main text.
To make the layout of poems go faster, when typing in Word it is desirable
separate stanzas by adding a blank line, i.e. Enter key;
for long verses, on several pages, indicate the place of transfer (if it matters).
Material Requirements: image files
Images should be present in the document with the author's text where they are defined by the author's intention. And the same image files are transmitted separately (the name or file number corresponds to the caption for the illustration in the text).
In any case, the image files of the book are transferred separately from the text.
Alternatively, you can not upload illustrations to the file with the author's text. In this case, it is necessary to indicate in the text the place where they should be and their sizes must be (for example, full page, 1/2 or 1/3 of a page, etc.).
Raster illustrations (*.psd, *.tif files) are of good quality, if their resolution is 300 ppi, and the number of pixels (px) depends on the size
А4 (210x297 mm) — 2480 х 3510 px;
A5 (148x210 mm) — 1748 x 2480 px;
A6 (105x148 mm) — 1240 x 1748 px;
A7 (74x105 mm) — 874 x 1240 px;
A8 (50x74 mm) — 591 x 874 px
Files with the extension *.png or *.gif are low-quality web-formats, they are too “easy” to print. Used on web pages.
What is included in the standard preparation of bitmaps
resolution 260–300 ppi (bitmap - 600/1200 ppi)
dimensions H x W mm as in the final layout
cmyk / grayscale / bitmap color model
Must be removed
contours of 'path', except when using the contour as an image clipping;
alpha channels, except for Pantone (as well as when using the channel as a clipping and only in the case of digital printing and in agreement with the technical requirements of the printing house of your choice);
color depth 8 bit;
when saving the color profile is not included
the final tif file format, all layers are flattened.
Retouching and other processing is negotiated separately.
Material Requirements: layout
If the layout is intended for the previously developed layout, for example. for a series of publications, then the old layout using Adobe InDesing should be collected in one folder: the layout file itself, the folder with fonts, the folder with images.
As with the layout of the finished template, and even more so when developing a new layout, it is necessary to agree/approve it.
1. Before proceeding to the layout, we make the layout of the book pages (sample, template or layout foundation), which we send you for approval - a pdf file* with an example of the layout of several turns**. Text for example can be from your book.
*To open a pdf file on your computer install free program Adobe Acrobat Reader DC
**The spread is two adjacent pages of an open book: on the left - even, and on the right - odd. The composition is one.
2. The layout shows in natural size the principles of placing the key design elements of the text block of the book.
leading and trailing strips,
titles of parts and sections,
chapters go in selection or start from a new page,
headlines,
epigraphs,
footnotes,
notes,
footers,
pagination,
quotes, etc.
3. After your written confirmation (by e-mail) that it is no longer necessary to refine the layout, we begin to impose a book.
4. Page size. When designing a layout, choose the page size used in the printing industry, i.e., the trimmed page size, margins and the width of the set.
5. It is important to determine the binding of the book before creating the text block layout.
6. Font selection. According to the technical requirements of printing houses in the layouts of books and other polygraphs, it is impossible to use system fonts (Arial, Times New Roman, etc.). But a lot of special book fonts have been created for layout. You can choose font parameters: size (size), typeface (character group or simply font name), leading (spacing of lines) based on your preferences, standards and type of work (prose, poetry, scientific publication).
7. How will the pages of the book, the font, etc. look on paper?
Print the pdf-file with the layout samples sent to you on a simple printer with a 100% scale and select what suits you.
Responsible to the approval (approval) of the layout, because to redo the design after the layout of the entire book is problematic.

The publication format is the size of the publication page after trimming the block in width and length.
The format of the publication is indicated not in the form of exact dimensions in millimeters, but in fractions of a sheet of printing paper used for printing.
In Ukraine, the requirements for the formats of book and magazine publications are set out in DSTU 4489: 2004. Editions are book and magazine. Requirements for formats adopted from 2006-01-01.
Author's sign
The author's sign is the symbol of the first word with which the first element of the bibliographic description begins. It consists of the initial letter of this word and the number corresponding to the first and sometimes subsequent letter combinations of the same word.
What kind of numbers are required in each case, helps determine the table of copyright signs. According to the table for Cyrillic, you can assign both binary and ternary numbers of the author's sign.
The author's sign is a mandatory element of the design of the book and is placed on the back of the title of publication.
The Astroprint publishing house provides services for the design of this sign in the books of our authors.
UDC
UDC - Universal Decimal Classification Index.
This classification is the basis for the systematization of knowledge accumulated by mankind in libraries, databases and other information repositories. UDC adopted for indexing scientific and technical documents in most countries of the world. In Ukraine, the UDC is a compulsory requisite for all books and information on natural and technical sciences.
The Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) was created at the beginning of the 20th century by Belgian bibliographers Paul Otle (Otlet) and Henri La Fontaine (Lafontaine). The basis was the Decimal Classification developed by the American bibliographer Melville Dewey (Dewey) for the Library of Congress in 1876. M. Dewey disinterestedly gave P. Otle and A. La Fontaine the right to use and modify their system to create a comprehensive catalog of published knowledge. For years, this work was carried out within the framework of the International Federation for Information and Documentation. The first edition of the full UDC tables was published in French in 1905. The UDC structure deviated from the original M. Dewey scheme over time, but in a number of sections the class indices of these systems almost coincide.
The central part of the UDC are the main tables covering the whole body of knowledge and built on the hierarchical principle of division from general to specific using a digital decimal code. Simply put, by the UDC index it is possible to determine to which subject and type of literature the book can be attributed without reading it. Works without this classifier are not even considered when registering in global databases.
The UDC index is a mandatory element of the output information of the publication.
The Astroprint publishing house provides services on the design of the UDC index for the books of our authors.
ISBN
ISBN is an international paper or e-book number. It is placed on the back of the title page. Room Standard was developed in the UK in 1966. In our country, the ISBN is issued by the State Scientific Institution “Book Chamber of Ukraine named after Ivan Fedorov”, which performs the functions of the National Agency ISBN. Astroprint Publishing House is registered in the base of the National Agency ISBN of Ukraine and has its own identification code, which is included in the ISBN.
Why is it important to issue an ISBN?
It allows you to add your book to the general world database of works, which makes it the official publication, will facilitate its search for vendors, librarians, readers. The presence of this number is also mandatory for implementation in the trade network.
There are cases when this number is not necessary. The main criteria: the final audience of the book and the method of its distribution. For example, you decided to write your memoirs, poems, stories, but they are intended only for a circle of relatives and close people.
When assigning an ISBN number to a publication, it is obligatory to send test copies according to the Register of mandatory distribution of Ukraine. You can view the registry below
ISBN consists of 13 digits. Until 2007, the number consisted of 10 digits, but then a new standard was introduced, which is still in use today. Formed number as follows
Prefix 978 (introduced since 2007)
Country code (for Ukraine it is 966)
Publishing code (for Astroprint publishing house it is 927)
The order number of the book in this publisher
Check digit (calculated using a special formula and needed to check the correctness of the number and reduce the number of errors during its processing)
Each book requires a unique number. For example, the electronic and paper versions of the same work will require different numbers. If a multi-volume edition, an ISBN number is assigned to a multi-volume edition as a whole and for each volume separately.
If a book is re-released after a change or a reissue, it also needs a new ISBN. Moreover, it is completely unimportant what the changes, text or design touched, and how serious these changes are.
ISBN is not assigned to the following editions
periodicals (magazines, newspapers, numbered yearbooks) - they are assigned a special «serial» number - ISSN
lecture notes, curricula and plans, publications in card form
cartographic publications (except atlases)
dissertation abstracts
artwork
Music editions are assigned an ISMN number.
