The necessary information to publish a book with us
Requirements for submitting materials: text
If you do not have the opportunity to make a computer set of the book text yourself, you can submit a manuscript to the publishing house.
Materials must be submitted in the order indicated by the content.
If you submit a computer set to the publishing house, it must meet the following requirements
Author's text
must be typed and submitted for layout in Word.
It is necessary to make the necessary text highlighting in the file (italic, bold, italic + bold), a clear breakdown into sections, chapters, hierarchy of headings, epigraphs, additional texts, lists, inserts, indicate places for illustrations.
If color coding is required, it is necessary to change the color of the text itself (font), not "raise" it with a marker.
Tables are typed without "coloring".
Word capabilities
Word has the ability to place text in separate frames. For example, to indicate an insert. Please do not use them. When pouring text into the layout program, these frames disappear. Recovery is possible, but it takes time
If you are not making a layout sketch in Word, but typing text for a book, the simpler the design, the better.
Spaces
double spaces are not allowed;
spaces (apros) between words should be distributed evenly, especially on one spread;
the text should not be strongly compressed in one paragraph and diluted in another
Hyphens
for book layout, the number of consecutive hyphens is no more than 3-4;
the layout program makes an error-free hyphenation;
hyphens from spread to spread are not allowed (from odd to even page);
do not hyphenate manually with a hyphen, as in the layout process, when re-composing the text, hyphens are preserved and all this will have to be caught by the corrector.
Dashes and hyphens
in complex words, when adding endings, a hyphen is placed;
between parts of a sentence, a hyphen is replaced by a long dash (with spaces on both sides) — Alt + 0151;
for a range of numbers, phone numbers, there is a short dash (without spaces) — Alt + 0150.
dashes cannot be left at the beginning of a line unless it is a dialogue or list.
Prepositions and conjunctions, initials>
one-letter prepositions and conjunctions must be "nailed" to the word, i.e. at the end of the line they cannot be left;
initials must be on the same line as the surname (preferably before the surname)
binding with a fixed space of initials to the surname, units of measurement to the number, prepositions, conjunctions to the word, etc. is done only in the layout process and in the layout program itself. In Word, this is useless.
Accentuations
Correct and quick placement of accents in the MS Word program
after the accented letter, type 0301 and immediately press the ALT+X key combination (keyboard in Latin - the letter "x");
place the cursor after the accented letter and press the ALT+769 combination (numbers on the side / numeric keypad).
Footnotes
Footnotes should be inserted not manually, but only with the help of the Word program
References tab -> Insert footnote
References tab -> Insert endnote
Lines
the first paragraph line should not remain the last on the page, breaking away from the following. Exception, but only within the spread: texts with a large number of short paragraphs or dialogues and small-format publications (e.g., pocket);
the end of the paragraph line (last) should not go to the next page, breaking away from the previous;
the last line of the paragraph should not be shorter than 1.5-2 lengths of the paragraph indent defined for a specific layout;
lines should be on one line on the spread and on the page spread;
never break lines with the Shift+Enter key combination;
start a new paragraph only with the Enter key.
Quotation marks
in printing, quotation marks in the form «» are preferably used, but it is important that they are the same throughout the text.
Apostrophe
correctly put with the key combination — Alt+0146.
The author's text must be thoroughly checked before being submitted for layout
making a small number of corrections after proofreading is standard. For making a correction with a large number of errors, adding or deleting blocks of text, an additional payment will be required.
A small book is better assembled in one file.
If you submit separate files of parts or chapters, you must provide a file with a list of their sequence (table of contents) or number in the file name itself: 1.doc, 2.doc.
Save Word files with the extension (type) *.doc Word 97-2003 (files *.docx must be resaved without the last letter "x").
Requirements for submitting materials: poems
Features of verse layout
the poem is usually placed in the optical center of the page;
alternating quatrains with indentation and without indentation from each other are not separated;
the indentation of quatrains is usually made to the font size;
in case of an undesirable break of quatrains on different pages, the indentation is reduced by 0.5 points, or increased to 1.5 points;
poems on the spread are designed uniformly;
poems inside prose are usually separated from the text by one line of the main text.
To speed up the verse layout, when typing in Word, it is desirable
separate quatrains by adding an empty line, i.e. the Enter key;
for long poems, on several pages, indicate the place of transfer (if it matters).
Requirements for submitting materials: image files
Images must be present in the document with the author's text where they are defined by the author's intent. And these same image files are transmitted separately (the file name or number corresponds to the caption to the illustration in the text).
In any case, the image files of the book are transmitted separately from the text
As an option, you can not upload illustrations to a file with the author's text. In this case, it is necessary to indicate in the text where they should be located and their sizes (e.g., on the whole page, on 1/2 or 1/3 of the page, etc.).
Raster illustrations (*.psd, *.tif files) of good quality, if their resolution is 300 ppi, and the number of pixels (px) depending on the size
А4 (210x297 mm) — 2480 х 3510 px;
A5 (148x210 mm) — 1748 x 2480 px;
A6 (105x148 mm) — 1240 x 1748 px;
A7 (74x105 mm) — 874 x 1240 px;
A8 (50x74 mm) — 591 x 874 px
Files with the extension *.png or *.gif are web formats of low quality, they are too "light" for printing. Used on web pages.
What is included in the standard preparation of raster images
resolution 260–300 ppi (bitmap — 600/1200 ppi)
dimensions H x W mm as in the final layout
color model cmyk / grayscale / bitmap
Must be removed
contours "path", except when using the contour as an image clipping;
alpha channels, except for Pantone (as well as when using the channel as an image clipping and only in the case of digital printing and by agreement with the technical requirements of the printing house you have chosen);
color depth 8 bit;
when saving, the color profile is not included
the final file format is tif, all layers are merged (flatten).
Retouching and other processing are agreed separately.
Requirements for submitting materials: layout
If layout is supposed to be done according to a previously developed layout, for example, for a series of publications, then the previous layout using Adobe InDesing tools must be assembled in one folder: the layout file itself, a folder with fonts, a folder with images.
As when layout according to a ready-made template and especially when developing a new layout, it must be agreed / approved.
1. Before starting the layout, we make a book page layout (sample, template, or layout basis), which we send to you for approval — a pdf* file with an example of the layout of several spreads**. The text for the example can be from your book.
*To open a pdf file on your computer install free program Adobe Acrobat Reader DC
**Spread — two adjacent pages of an open book: on the left — even, and on the right — odd. Compositionally, it is one whole.
2. The layout shows in real size the principles of placing key elements of the book text design
initial and end sheets,
part and section titles,
chapters are in a set or start on a new page,
headings,
epigraphs,
footnotes,
notes,
headers and footers,
page numbering,
quotation marks, etc.
3. After your written confirmation (by email) that the layout no longer needs to be finalized, we start to layout the book.
4. Page size. When developing a layout, the page size used in printing is selected, i.e. the trimmed page format, fields, and the width of the set strip.
5. It is important to determine the book binding before creating the text block layout.
6. Font selection. According to the technical requirements of printing houses, system fonts (Arial, Times New Roman, etc.) cannot be used in book and other printing layouts. But there are enough special book fonts created for layout. You can choose font parameters: font size, font (font name), leading (line spacing) based on your preferences, standards, and the type of work (prose, poetry, scientific publication).
7. What will the book pages, font, etc. look like on paper?
Print the pdf file with layout samples sent to you on a simple printer, be sure to at 100% scale, and choose what suits you.
Treat the approval (agreement) of the layout responsibly, as it can be problematic to redo the design after the layout of the entire book.

The format of the publication is the size of the publication page after trimming the block in width and length.
The format of the publication is denoted not as exact sizes in millimeters, but as a share of the sheet of typographic paper used in printing.
In Ukraine, the requirements for the formats of book and magazine publications are set out in DSTU 4489:2004. Publications book and magazine. Requirements for formats, adopted from 2006-01-01.
Author's sign
The author's sign is a conditional designation of the first word from which the first element of the bibliographic description begins. It consists of the initial letter of this word and a number corresponding to the first, and sometimes subsequent letter combinations of the same word.
The table of author's signs helps to determine exactly which numbers are required in each case. According to the table for Cyrillic, both binary and ternary numbers of the author's sign can be assigned.
The author's sign is a mandatory element of book design and is placed on the reverse side of the title of the publication.
The publishing house "Astroprint" provides services for the design of this sign in the books of our authors.
UDC
UDC — index of the Universal Decimal Classification.
This classification is the basis for systematizing the accumulated knowledge of mankind in libraries, databases, and other information repositories. UDC is accepted for indexing scientific and technical documents in most countries of the world. In Ukraine, UDC is a mandatory attribute of all book products and information on natural and technical sciences.
The Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) was created in the early 20th century by Belgian bibliographers Paul Otlet and Henri La Fontaine. The Decimal Classification developed by American bibliographer Melvil Dewey for the Library of Congress of the United States in 1876 was taken as the basis. M. Dewey unselfishly provided P. Otlet and A. Lafontaine with the right to use and modify his system to create a comprehensive catalog of published knowledge. For many years, this work was carried out within the framework of the International Federation for Information and Documentation. The first edition of the complete UDC tables was published in French in 1905. The structure of the UDC over time has deviated from the original scheme of M. Dewey, but in a number of sections, the class indexes of these systems are almost the same.
The main tables covering the entire body of knowledge and built on a hierarchical principle of division from general to particular using a digital decimal code are the central part of the UDC. In simpler terms, by the UDC index, you can determine to which subject and type of literature the book can be attributed without reading it. Works without this classifier are not even considered for registration in global databases.
The UDC index is a mandatory element of the publication output.
The publishing house "Astroprint" provides services for the design of the UDC index for the books of our authors.
ISBN
ISBN is an international number for a paper or electronic book. It is placed on the reverse side of the title page. The standard number was developed in the UK in 1966. In our country, the issuance of ISBN is handled by the State Scientific Institution "Book Chamber of Ukraine named after Ivan Fedorov", which performs the functions of the National ISBN Agency. The publishing house "Astroprint" is registered in the database of the National ISBN Agency of Ukraine and has its identification code, which is included in the ISBN.
Why is it important to design ISBN?
It allows you to enter your book into the general world database of works, making it an official publication, facilitating its search for sellers, librarians, readers. The presence of this number is mandatory for implementation in the trading network.
There are cases when this number is not needed. The main criteria: the final audience of the book and the way it is distributed. For example, you decided to write your memoirs, poems, stories, but they are intended only for a circle of relatives and close people.
When assigning an ISBN to an edition, it is mandatory to send control copies according to the Registry of Mandatory Distribution of Ukraine. You can familiarize yourself with the register below
ISBN consists of 13 digits. Until 2007, the number consisted of 10 digits, but then a new standard was introduced, which is still used today. The number is formed as follows
Prefix 978 (introduced since 2007)
Country code (for Ukraine it is 966)
Publisher code (for the publishing house "Astroprint" it is 927)
The serial number of the book in this publishing house
Control digit (calculated by a special formula and is needed to check the correctness of the number and reduce the number of errors in its processing)
Each book requires a unique number. For example, different numbers will be required for the electronic and paper versions of the same work. If the edition is multi-volume, then the ISBN is assigned to the multi-volume edition as a whole and to each volume separately.
If the book is reissued after changes or this is a reissue, it also needs a new ISBN. Moreover, it does not matter at all what the changes affected, the text or design, and how serious these changes are
ISBN is not assigned to the following editions
periodicals (journals, newspapers, numbered yearbooks) — they are assigned a special "serial" number — ISSN
lecture notes, curricula and plans, card publications
cartographic publications (except atlases)
abstracts of dissertations
art publications
Music publications are assigned an ISMN number

Proofreading marks
Proofreading marks are a system of conditional designations used when correcting a proof.
When checking the text, our proofreaders use the system of proofreading marks according to GOST 7.62–90. System of standards for information, library, and publishing. Marks for marking originals and correcting proofs and trial prints. General requirements, introduced 01.01.91.
You can familiarize yourself with the main designations here
